Preston North End will have to soldier on without midfield general Richard Chaplow for the rest of the month.
The 23-year-old suffered a torn hamstring in last week's derby defeat to former club Burnley and will be sidelined for four weeks.

It's a big blow to North End who have missed his influence in the engine room, with their form taking a dip with him out of the team.

Chaplow first injured his hamstring in the goalless draw at Coventry last month, missing the following two matches – the win over Nottingham
Forest and Wolves' 3-1 victory at Deepdale.

He returned among the substitutes at Turf Moor last week, but within
minutes of being summoned from the bench to replace Darren Carter, he damaged the muscle again.

It sidelined him for Tuesday's loss to Swansea, and it looks like being the end of the month at the earliest before he's back.

One small consolation for PNE is that the fortnight's international break begins after today's visit to Watford.

Manager Alan Irvine said: "It's really unfortunate – the injury was another thing which went against us at Burnley last week.

"The very first run Richard made, he felt his hamstring tighten up.

"Having made all our substitutions it meant we couldn't do anything about it.

"Richard had to play on for the remainder of the game without being fully able to contribute.

"With hamstrings, no matter what you say, there is no truer test of them than a game.

Meanwhile, Liam Chilvers (right) continued his comeback from a snapped Achilles tendon by playing an hour in the reserves' 1-1 draw at Morecambe in midweek.

And Irvine revealed the centre-half has stepped up to the next stage of his rehabilitation period after seven months on the sidelines.

He said: "Liam resumed training again on Monday after a little hamstring pull, and I'm delighted about that.

"The thing that he is looking for now is that explosive power which you need in games.

"When you are recovering from a long-term injury, you generally have to put in the mileage to get yourself back to fitness.

"Then the final bit is the sharpness, so Liam is on a speed programme at the moment.

"It's about quality, power and speed rather than distance now. It's the last piece of the jigsaw."

Without Chaplow the midfield is plodding. Its lacks pace, bite, width and creativity. Where is Wallace? - This lad has real talent and is easily a top 6 Championship player. I fully expected him to be in the 1st Team weeks ago once he got up to speed. We need Wallace or Whaley in to provide a threat from out wide. We have the players this season that we lacked last season, in midfield and up front yet we seem to want to play a very narrow, deep midfield. The midfield is too far away from the strikers who constantly get isolated. We need to be more assertive, aggressive, on the front foot, posing the opposition a genuine threat.

Think we will struggle today. We still lack aerial presence at CB - we are too easily outmuscled & struggle to clearer the 1st ball. We have a young keeper (without much needed competition) who is still learning. We can't afford to sit deep like in recent games and encourage Teams (& long shots) on to us. We need to win the ball higher up the pitch. Birky, agree with your midfield but feel even Jarret may need to be given a go in the centre if things don't improve. However we need some pace & bite in their. Disagree about Mellor. The service to him has been awful. However lets give Elliot a go - He has good movement and is fairly pacy.

My team would be:

Lonergan
Jones
Mawene
St Ledger
Mceveley
Wallace
Nicholson
Whaley
Elliott
Brown
Mellor

The team of late has been poor, Mckenna has been poor, Sedgwick is awful but he is being played out of position, Wallace deserves a chance - he's a natural left-winger, Whaley is a natural right winger - cant understand why he's been dropped - he's got pace, Elliott deserves his chance alongside Brown and Mellor, Parkin is useless. The service to the strikers has been non-existant, try out this team 4-3-3 formation, it cant be any worse than the last 3 games, we cant afford to lose again. C'mon Alan Irvine- sort it out !!!

Following on from our discussion regarding a `sugar daddy`, I was very interested to read the BBC 606 Watford forum.
Apparently, some think that Elton`s previous involvement in the club has resulted in the current predicament and that a massive cash injection is not always the best thing that can happen.
Whether you happen to agree or disagree with that line of reasoning, it made interesting reading and gave food for thought.
