Leaves on the line may be the stuff of urban legend – but it is a very real peril for Lancashire commuters.
Months of disruptive improvement work on rail tracks across the UK is finally coming to a close.

But services across the county will be disrupted throughout winter – because of those irritating leaves.

Northern Rail services through Preston, Leyland and Chorley will all be two minutes later than normal so trains can slow down on hazardous stretches of track.

And commuters from Clitheroe to Manchester will have to get up five minutes early from now on because of the problems.

Trains will depart from Clitheroe and stations along the route five minutes earlier than normal and will arrive at Clitheroe two minutes later than normal.

Trains from Southport will also be affected.

But Northern Rail bosses insist the problem is no joke and leaves on the line can be as dangerous as black ice is for cars.

Some of these train companies are going to be hit hard with the credit crunch. Get your excuses in now whilst the going is bad, its only going to get worse.

Where a railway line has incline, the traction of the wheels on the rail can be affected by any wet material. Its a very real problem on lines through wooded areas whether there is a credit crunch or not. Timings are affected on the Clitheroe - Bolton stretch. Of course in steam days, small fires sparks would burn off any weeds plus smoke and soot would kill off any foliage on nearby trees.

I hope the press will take this subject seriously now and not treat it as a 'joke', like they've done for years, despite knowing the facts all along. They never make jokes about black ice - the road equivalent, so why do they make 'jokes' at the Railways?
