Thousands of people are expected to take part in Preston On The Move on Sunday.

Dozens of city centre roads will be closed for all or part of the day to allow runners and cyclists to take part in safety. The market car park will also be closed for the whole day by Preston Council.

Highlight of the day will be the Cycle Grand Prix, featuring a 1km race for professional cyclists. Members of the public will also be able to try the course on their bikes.

The event includes three Run Preston races – a 10km and 5km race and the popular fun run.

Supporters of the day, organised by Preston Council and Central Lancashire Primary Care Trust, include Olympic runner Helen Clitheroe and cyclist Graham Briggs.

Roads will close from 8am and only re-open once it is safe to do so.
Those closed during the morning session include Market Street, Earl Street, Cheapside, Birley Street, Glovers Court, Glover Street, Cross Street, Winckley Square, Starkie Street, Avenham Lane, Ribblesdale Place, Fishergate, The Esplanade, Riverside and Kilruddery Road.

The Preston Cycle Grand Prix races starts at 1pm and roads will be closed for the cycling from noon.

Roads closed in the afternoon include Ring Way, Friargate, Cheapside, Birley Street, Earl Street and Lancaster Road. Crossing points will be placed along the cycle route to allow pedestrians to cross the roads.

Insp Richard Cox, of Lancashire Police, said: "In order to facilitate a safe day of events it will result in extensive road closures across the city centre.

"I would urge people coming into the city by car throughout Sunday to plan their journey carefully."
